Introduction
Hardboard garage doors are available with a surface either unprimed (uncoated) or primed. The following recommendations for initially finishing these doors are provided by the American Hardboard Association.
The surface of hardboard used on garage doors is ideal for field applied coatings since hardboard does not have knots, grain raise, or other defects that typically shorten the coatings life. Hardboard used on garage doors is made from wood. As such, it must be properly coated initially and maintained if satisfactory performance is to be achieved from the hardboard door as well as the field applied coatings.
The purpose of the exterior finishing is to both protect and to beautify the door. These recommendations are intended as a guide to achieve both functions for a reasonable service life on hardboard garage doors. Finishing practices which do not meet the following criteria may result in less than satisfactory results.
Finish Selections
Quality
Select a paint or stain clearly and specifically intended for exterior use on hardboard from a reputable coating manufacturer. Make certain it is a top quality finish with a list of ingredients on the label. A finish performance warranty is desirable.
Surface Preparation
The surface of the wood, hardboard skin/panel, must be clean, free of dust and dirt, mildew and other contamination.
Method of Application
Follow the directions on the finish label, paying particular attention to special primer requirements, hardboard surface temperature, rate of spread and recommended application procedures. Brush or spray application is preferred.
Number of Coats/Coating Thickness
A total film thickness of 4 dry mils (.004”) minimum for all surfaces – face, back and edges – is required. Therefore, apply 2 coats of exterior paint/stain to the outside, inside, and all edges on the door before installation.
Maintenance and Refinishing
Yearly inspection of the exterior of the garage door will pay dividends when refinishing eventually becomes necessary. If the finish appears in good condition, cleaning and touch-up is often adequate. When the finish becomes badly eroded and thin, clean and prime the areas where the substrate is showing through, followed by complete priming and finish coating. If there is no substrate showing through, finish coating only may be adequate.
Recommended Finishing Procedures
Wood Flush Door
Use an exterior alkyd/oil primer which will seal the face, back and edges of the entire door if not primed. DO NOT use linseed oil base or water base primers. Use only an oil base exterior flat or satin finish paint; DO NOT use a water base paint. The door should have two coats inside and out and on all four edges.
RUF-textured Door
Use the same priming and painting instructions as for wood flush doors if painting is desired. (Gloss paints may be used on RUF-textured doors.)
If stain is desired, stain only textured hardboard. DO NOT apply stain to smooth hardboard. Use opaque acrylic latex stain only.
Wood Panel Door
Use the same priming and painting instructions as for wood flush doors. (Gloss paints may be used on wood panel doors.) Two coats of exterior finish paint are required on the entire door.
Raised Redwood Panel Door
Use the same priming and painting instructions as for wood flush doors if painting is desired. Two coats of exterior finish paint are required on the entire door. Satin or gloss paints are recommended. If stain is desired, use two coats of exterior oil stain. It is important to stain the entire door (face, edges and back).
Custom Wood Doors with Windows
Paint grade custom wood doors upon request can be primed painted prior to installation for $1.25/sq. ft. add on. Stain grade custom wood door upon request can be pre-stained prior to installation by customer’s painting contractor either at our facility or painting contractor’s for a $125.00 deliver charge within a 50 mile radius.
Stain or paint grade custom wood doors that have a window muntin design at top section. Unless the door is pre-painted or stained prior to installation, the glass is installed prior to door installation, therefore the window muntin will be unfinished. This will not effect the warranty. If the homeowner or contractor desires to have the interior of the window muntin painted, they will do so at their own expense.
Additional Instructions for All Doors:
Unprimed doors should be finished immediately after installation. Primed doors should be finished within seven days after installation. Application of paint should be by brush; DO NOT apply with roller.
Warranty
All materials manufactured by Entrance Systems are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year. All painting and installation instructions must be followed as stated to be eligible for a warranty.
Warning
Hardboard-type flush doors are subject to moisture condensing between the two skins which will cause bowing and, in severe cases, delamination of the skins from the frame and core.

Entrance Systems DOES NOT extend any guarantee protection for doors which are installed in violation of the above conditions. The guarantee on all doors is limited to a one-time replacement of material only, within one year from date of installation, and no labor or related costs are accepted under this guarantee, and no other warranty is expressed or implied except as stated herein.
